In the craziness of this speedy life, finding time to relax is something too important , people can have different ways to relax, those who simply prefer to sleep, others to hang out with friends, spend more time listening to music, reading, blogging, spying others on facebook…hehe, I’m kidding…
Of course, I do all listed above, but I also watch movies:), more specifically Bollywood movies. Ohh yes, I’m a bollywood fan.
This preference for bollywood has drawn a lot of sarcastic smiles and sentences like “what?!!! U like Indian movies?!!!!ohhh” or “I thought it was jus stupid and jobless people who like these kind of films”, a part from ordinary people reactions, some medias (newspapers and radios) give a negative view about this spicy cinema, so far from reality and objectivity.
Well, I’m neither a jobless person, nor a desperately romantic stupid girl, so I’d like in this little post to answer a question I have been asked several times “Why do I like Bollywood?” but before let me clarify some misunderstandings about Indians cinema.
From an article I read lately about bollywood, the journalist was complaining about broadcasting these “stupid movies” on our channels. According to her, the story of all bolly movies is the following: a girl falls in love with a guy, but the family doesn’t agree because one of them is poor while the other is rich, all this happen in the middle of fights and background Hindi music. Usually in the end, one of the heroes dies…ohhh!!!...and a final sad song is played to conclude the movie”…When I read this, my reaction was “what the hell is that?”
How can people write an article and criticize something they know nothing about. I’m sure this person has seen a few old Hindi movies and has already given herself the right to call these movies meaningless and stupid etc…What people who criticize bolly don’t know is that this cinema is diversified, I agree with this journalist that the story she has described was repeated in some bollywood movies, however not all bolly films have the same story. A lot of them are so realistic, and harsh in depicting Indian society with all its contradictions, problems and diversity. I can mention some of these movies like Dil se, Yuva, Guru, Rang de Basanti, Chandni bar, swades, Anwar and the list is so long.
What is sad here in Morocco is that instead of understanding the beauty of this cinema, some people who know nothing about Indian films industry start criticizing without bothering themselves to discover these spicy charming, funny, intense movies. Unfortunately they are losing in adopting this silly attitude a so interesting opportunity to bring life to our deserted sad theatres.
It is true that the Eyes of the world are on Indian economic development but also on its art and culture, especially bollywood. Indeed it is no surprise that the opening film of the Berlin festival of cinema this year is an Indian movie “Om Shanti Om” which stared the Mega Indian star Shah Rukh Khan.
Now, let me answer the question “why do I love bollywood?”
Because it’s colourful, joyful, funny, spicy, relaxing, cause it takes me to this land of dream where I switch off any connection with reality for three hours or more, then when I come back to this world, I feel fresh and vivacious…isn’t convincing? :)
What I like most about bollywood, is that they remind us of some values and emotions we sometimes forget or neglect like the importance of love friendship and respect (respecting your parents, lover, wife/husband etc…), and above all altruism which is present in a lot of movies. It is true that these emotions are exaggerated sometimes, but isn’t it the magic of bollywood?...
Experiencing Bollywood means going through extreme emotions, this is why if u decide to watch movies like Kal Ho Na Ho, Devdas or K3G, be ready to experience something great called CRYING…
Some people don’t like to cry and don’t like to watch men crying, but one of the reasons that make Shah Rukh Khan charming to me is because he cries in a lot of his movies, it is funny yet nice.
What I like about Bollywood is songs and dances; at least when the movie is boring I enjoy songs, which is not the case with American and a lot of Arabic movies.
Some people don’t appreciate Bolly movies cause of its length (more then 3 hours sometimes), however, I do love Indian movies cause of its length, I like long movies. When i get hooked on a movie, a connection is created between me and the characters so I wish it never ends, and bollywood fulfils this wish perfectly with its songs and colourful scenes.
Some people who criticize Bollywood make me laugh sometimes, guess why? These smart westernized people who don’t want to look stupid for watching Indian movies for its lack of reality have no problem to admit they like movies like Spiderman, stars war, Matrix, saw etc…So according to you dear readers what is more realistic? a men flying in the sky and trying to save the world and why not the whole universe or someone experiencing deep emotions like deep extreme exaggerated love ( call it whatever u’d like:)) and dancing with his/her loved one in streets under the rain …WOW?
Why some people find it hard to watch intense love, anger, friendship, happiness, sadness but so easy to watch violence and sex scenes?
Indian cinema as any kind of cinema has got its bad and its good share; there are great movies with a great script, acting, and direction but also stupid meaningless movies. I can understand if some people don’t like Indian movies, at the end it’s a matter of taste, but I don’t appreciate when this cinema is underrated especially by people who know nothing about it.
To enjoy an Indian movie, u should watch it with ur heart and u need to prepare urself to a great extreme emotions experience, but not all Indian movies require this preparation cause some of them as it has been mentioned are so close to reality.
